Thanks to a generous donor, Baltimore Concert Opera conducted, and exceeded, a matching grant campaign during the 2011-2012 season! Our donors gave in excess of our $20,000 goal in the spring of 2012, and helped Baltimore Concert Opera secure its place in the future of opera in Baltimore.
Baltimore Concert Opera currently derives approximately 50% of its yearly budget from ticket sales. Because of this, private donations are incredibly important — essential, in fact. Your donations enable us to continue to grow as a company, increasing the size of our staff and the quality of our productions. We, the board members of BCO, have each dedicated ourselves to donate countless hours of our lives in order to ensure the future of this organization. We view you, our audience members, as partners in this endeavor, and with your help, we’ve taken extraordinary steps toward financial stability. Here are a few of the things that we have accomplished:
Capital Purchases:
Lighting System
- Your generous donations have enabled us to purchase to purchase four stage lights and all of the rigging and electronics necessary to use the lights in our theater. Previously, we had rented the lights for each production. Purchasing the lighting system alleviates this per-show rental fee, and accordingly the lights will have paid for themselves after only a few productions.
Supertitle projector/Screen/Scaffolding
- Our yearly budget benefits tremendously from not having to rent this equipment.
Supertitle Collection
- BCO has procured a supertitle library of 45 standard repertoire supertitle sets.
- If we had continued to rent our supertitles, the cost would have ranged from $500 to $750 per show. This is an enormous savings!
- We have now wiped out 2-3k in yearly expenses, as well as produced a sizable rental income.
Balanced Budgets
- Once again, we have balanced our budget and ended our season “in the black.” We work very hard to conservatively and creatively budget our season.
We realize that we cannot continue to ask the same people for the same support, in order to accomplish the same things, year after year. Please know that if you choose to support us financially, we look for every way to stretch those dollars. It is our hope that in the near future, we are able to take a portion of each donation, no matter how small, and put it aside toward an endowment.

Volunteers
There are many ways that you can volunteer….
- Ushering at performances
- Selling tickets
- Stuffing envelopes
- Picking up/returning lighting rentals
- Picking up artists from airport
- Offering a home-stay for an artist
- Do you have a private room in your home where an out of town artist could comfortably stay for a few days? This is a great way to be involved, and get to know a fantastic singer!
- Helping to prepare grant applications
Essentially, if you have a talent that you think we can use…we’d love to know about it. We are a small group of volunteers ourselves, and we believe that many hands make light work. If you see a way you can help, please e-mail suzanne@BaltimoreConcertOpera.com for more information.
