Information for singers wishing to register for our second annual "So you think you can sing opera?" Auditions
Application Deadline: March 1
Applicants will be notified on or before March 15
Potential repertoire for 2010/2011 season includes:
La Boheme, Rigoletto, Madama Butterfly, Il Barbiere di Siviglia, Le Nozze di Figaro, Tosca
Auditions will take place in the grand ballroom at the Garrett Jacobs Mansion, in front of a live audience. Participants will be asked to prepare three arias. Audition panel will choose which aria is heard. We ask applicants to fill out a short on-line form, as well as pay a $10 audition fee to defray the cost of our accompanist. You will only be charged an audition fee if you are selected for an audition. Please only answer the questions asked, there is a method to our madness. (i.e. when asked to "tell us something fun about yourself" please do not insert your resume. That's not fun). Applicants will be asked as part of the survey to list up to five roles that they are prepared to sing or have sung. Please do not list a role that you would not be prepared to sing an excerpt from if asked to do so.
Last year's audition was a great success and yielded us most of the singers for our current season. We received feedback from many of our singers regarding the auditions and how nice it was to be able to sing in front of a live audience. Feedback from the audience was incredibly positive and we believe that attendance will continue to grow in subsequent years. Finally, and at the risk of sounding pompous and self-important, (when you get to know us, you'll learn that is not the case!) if you have any doubt as to whether or not this is an appropriate format for you, please take a moment to look through our previous performance cast lists. Look through the bios of our artists. Google them. Listen to these audio clips from recent BCO performances:
Many companies have a long application. We do not! This is by design as we don't have the administrative staff to go through long applications. We expect that our applicants will have done the research to know that this is a good fit for them. We are looking for brilliant singing!
Finally, if selected, here is a little bit about the gig:
We are a concert opera company that performs with piano accompaniment and open score. Although the score does not need to be necessarily memorized, our most successful performances have come from singers who are able to interact with their colleagues and merely have the score present as a reference. The complete time commitment for a BCO concert is usually under one week. There is one musical rehearsal with a pianist and conductor, a dress rehearsal, and two performances. The BCO will cover the cost of getting you to Baltimore and housing you while you are here (in home-stays as often as we're able to arrange). At present, fees rarely exceed $500 for a soloist. Our format is most appealing to professional singers who have either performed their role before and can do so for us with little preparation, or to those that are in the process of preparing a role for an upcoming engagement and see the merit of being able to sing through the role with a complete cast. Our format is not for the faint of heart, or for those singers looking to gain experience. It is fast, intense and also a tremendous amount of fun! All BCO performances are professionally recorded for archival purposes.
